SPECIAL: JAKARTA EDITION

My mate Steve Pennells is in Jakarta and he sent me this email:

"Well, six days down and I'm still staying in a hotel in the middle of the Kuningan district - metres from the bombsite and smack bang in the middle of the area that the US and Australian governments have warned westerners to leave because they have intelligence that a second bomb is imminent.
But that's okay, because every morning when I sit down for breakfast I am greeted with this sign.Maybe it is the group photo of the hotel's serious-looking security crew -- most of whom I now know by name -- or perhaps the fact that they are all equipped with the latest terrorist-fighting "handly talkys" that makes me feel so safe...steve"

Ahh thos wacky Indonesian's what will they think of next.... anyways... back to my travels...

Long gone is the Burek Tour... it's now time for the Fish and chip tour...

Sports Illustrated parties are the shit!!

MTV parties are shit!

Princess Mary is beautiful!

Aussie Baseballers rock out hard. But not as hard as the softballers…

Spectator Services volunteers are blockheads…

No typhoons have slammed the coast….

Thorpe is not gay…

5 hours of sleep is the maximum needed to operate ok

2 hours of sleep the minimum.

Working and partying hard leads to lack of souvlaki tour updates!!!1

Well.. this maybe the last souv tour update for a while…. Thanks for reading and laughing along with me… see you all in london/nyc/sanfran/Chicago/Sydney…

BUMPER PICTURE EDITION

AUGUST 17th

Have you ever been to the best gig you have ever been to in your life but no one is there to share it with you? I’m doing it right now.

The games have finally started…. the cauldron is lit, and the Athletes are competing….but there’s one thing missing…. The people…

Aside from a few select events like swimming and judo, the stands at this year’s games are pretty much empty. So much for the biggest sporting event in the world.

At first it appeared that ATHOC’s decision to host the games at a time when many Athenians leave to journey far from Athens was a good one. There are certainly less cars on the road and transport is a breeze.

However this is the problem, without the traffic and the people, and the crowds, these games might as well be a glorified sports carnival.

Things I miss about Sydney… huge amounts of people wandering the streets all dressed up in national costume. Getting on a packed train and yelling over the top of everyone. Making conversation with people from different countries whilst waiting 10 minutes for a beer at the bar.

The only place that appears to be worth hanging out in is …. The Holland Heineken House..

Man! As those dutch taught the world in Sydney .. they know how to party! These days the HHH isn’t as full as it was in Sydney, but it is still pretty good.  The beer is cold , the Music is loud, the dance floor is pumping, it’s about as good as it gets when it comes to matching a Sydney Olympic Party vibe… everyone there is there for the games.. and everyone there (particularly last night) is there to celebrate Hooganband…. And because the place is half packed with aussies they celebrate Thorpe as well.

So the HHH is the place to be in Athens during the games… but if the place is packed full of Aussies…. I have a question…. WHERE IS THE BLOODY AUSTRALIAN V.B. HOUSE?  Yeah good question…

So while The Last Lap gave Athens a miss I think they just couldn’t be bothered to do something cool here… and they have missed out.. the HHH has just lapped it all up.

I am now pumped more than ever because I am going to design for Beijing an Aussie House… Here me now!!! There will be a place for the hordes of Australians, Kiwis, Dutch, Danes, Japs, Americans, Canadians, and anyone who likes to party to get their rox off!

It’s going to have any CUB beer on tap. It’ll have a great dance arena like the HHH, It’ll have Giant TV screens, It’ll have Meat Pies, Sausage Rolls, Donner Kebabs, any Australian food in fact. There will be formal dining… and……get ready… an adjoining TV studio for live OB’s of Roy and H.G…. with room for 300 bums on seats!!

(currently you need IBC accreditation to go and see the boys)

Well what do you think? I think that’ll be shit hot!

How good was Thorpe Last Night!! Go Son!!... if you wanna see some of my lates pics.. check out da link below

A Week KICK ASS PICS!!!! See the latest pictures!

AUGUST 11th

Okay… I would be the first to admit that I have been a little cynical when it comes to Greek culture…. (Well mainly the Olympic tax scam..) But I thought I should balance out the spread sheet when it came to the good and the bad….

2 Bad Things…

Bad Thing Number 1) Olympic Tax… the non existent tax related to anything Olympic.. taxi drivers trying to scam their customers and extra $6-$15 here and there. Restaurateurs giving separate menus with Greek prices and English prices. Hooker charging extra for anal that kind of thing… do I look like I can afford these extra bits… to I have IOC Olympic Family stamped on my forehead… no!

Bad Thing Number 2) Greeks are a cool race… (Not the bad thing… wait for it) because they have a strong sense of identity  and are proud to the point of Arrogance about that. Sure as an Australian I think we rock.. however we don’t have the culture that these guys and gals have… maybe it comes from living on top of each other in concrete cocoons or an ancient homoerotic Spartan past… or maybe it’s their even more ancient and Neanderthal sewer system.

It is claimed that the sewers are so old and ancient that they were made when the rainbow serpent was just a baby by a horde of bored Greeks just waiting to concrete something…anything. So they set to work on concreting tunnels under all of the villages to cart their poopies and wee wees far, far away.. ( I don’t know where… maybe all the way to Brunswick… hey it makes sense….. oi! Don’t Judge me!) Now this is not a bad thing either!...

The sewer is a good thing for sure… back in ancient times it was revolutionary… however… now… it poses a threat, in that it’s ancient concrete tunnels are the same as they were first constructed… the result of this is that gross pollutants and solids that are hard to break down don’t work too well in the ancient pipes. Therefore Athenians have developed a unique culture of popping used toilet paper in a flip top garbage bin next to every toilet in the city. Make no mistake this in my mind is FOUL!

When going to the toilet you can help but think that right next to you is a steaming heap of used toilet paper. It makes doing number two’s in Athens an unnerving experience… I find it hard to get the Colonic muscles doing their job when a tin full of other peoples poop is right next to me. I just can’t it in me to do the same so like many westerners I flush my poopie paper.  An action that has developed over the past 22 years into a skilful art of cleaning my bot bot as poop free as possible.

Now on my own, I am probably not going to bring about the downfall of the Ancient Greek Sewer System, but just 3 days out from the games I cant help but think *Thinking Music* “If every westerner does what I do in the next 3 weeks  Athens will explode in a glorified steaming heap of shit by the closing ceremony”

Mm food for thought.. at least there will be use for the Olympic cauldron after the games to burn off all the excess ethanol.

2 Good Things

Good Thing 1) Frappe! An Iced coffee drink that “Grecians” love to drink slowly in the morning whilst sitting in a café yapping, smoking, reading the paper, or bludging on the job.

Good Thing 2) Fetta Cheese. Yum

Well I feel better now that I’ve balanced the books.

I’m not too cynical…. (but I know you think I am.. well you would.. Malakaa)

AUGUST 8TH 2004

Beware after reading this entry you maybe asked for an Olympic Tax.

Yes boys and girls Uncle Daniel is at the games on his very own. Well I do have some personal interactions here and there.

I’m flatting with an interesting Rumanian guy who has the mental maturity of a six year old whilst he is stuck in his dilapidated 25 year old body.

Every day I try and get into the Main Press Centre through the media entrance with a Food Services Upgrade pass. And every day I sit in the Mag and Bag tent for ½ and hour while explain to the door volunteers that I am not working in food services and an a guest of the ****, and every day gain entry after 40 min of arguing.

Everyday I mostly have good experiences with Greeks and the Greek way of life.

And Everyday some rude greek guy ruins it for the lot of them.

Yesterday was a day like I explained above.

I had to go to the Australian Olympic uniform distribution centre about 5min away from the MPC (Main Press Centre) by car. I made the journey by taxi four times yesterday

 a: To get out there

b: to come back to get my battery charger

c: to get out there

d: to come back to edit the film.

Each time the Taxi drivers went different ways to and from the Uniform Distribution Centre (In Greece variety is the spice of life) however the meter never read more than $3.50. On my last trip back to the MPC as the driver pulled up I was relieved that the meter said $3.40.

I was thinking.. this guy.. he is the best taxi driver I have ever had.. he drove fast.. he spoke English.. we conversed on all things Greek... he had cousins living in Australia…. He was cool..

Then he said “$3.40”  I handed him a $5 note expecting to get $1 Back…he continued “ plus $3 Olympic Charge” “I don’t think so” I said “You owe me one Euro!” “No no this is true, When we drive to Olympic Venue’s it is an extra three euro… ask the Policeman over there” So I did I opened the door wide and got the policeman to come over… he looked angry and I would be too if I was reading the paper drinking a frappe, listening to the radio, enjoying the shade of a beautiful gum tree and then asked to attend the argument of a taxi driver. So the cop and his m16 came over and I said to him that the taxi driver was ripping me off and generally being a Malaka…. A word I learnt recently.. So while they argued I got my bags out of the car and swiftly walked around the corner as to avoid being run down by an angry Taxi driver or shot to bits by a policeman with white cotton gloves, a whistle, a sailors hat and an M16.

I was am now 1 Euro poorer.. so I will now ask you for your Olympic Tax… drop me $1 through paypal to downwind@optushome.com.au. This is true ask Jacque Frogge you can email him on jaque.frogge@ioc.org

PICTURE GALLERY 2 Happy Days Pictures....no cabdrivers

August 5th 2004

Ne ne! i've been here for 3days now and I can tell you everything you know and have heard about Greece is true. (Except for the concentration camps where they put short fat guys named Luigi, someone was having me on) Greeks are loud, Greeks, are nice, and Greeks for the most part are a bloody good looking race. The terms Greek Goddes/Adonis do not go astray. One other Cliche is that Greeks are meant to be Easy going, i have foudn this to be untrue on a number of occasions. I was inside OAKA (Athens Olympic Park) taking picture of the lazy workers taking a smoke break whilst thinking about putting water in the swimming pool and fixing the giant holes in the pavement. Just as I was about to take a few snapshots of some very dodgy goings on, a policman with an UZI comes up and starts yelling at me, in greek, which poses a problem coz i dont' speak greek, well i know only one work... so i said it to him "malaka!".

This word "Malaka"I now understand means somthing very bad, but at the time it was the only thing i could remember.

anyway that ensured more yelling and more guards and more me being pushed out of the OAKA. So i got taken out of the lock down zone. However i needed to get to the Train at Irini which is on the other side to where i was unceremoniously castrated. I could not be stuffed walking around the entire olympic park... but i appeared that was no option so i started walking around....too my surprise i found an open gate that was not being guarded (so much for lock down) and walked straight though to the station taking photographs on the way.

Here are some pics from the Athens
